For over a decade, I’ve been on a mission to unlock the secrets of nature and harness its power to transform lawns and landscapes into thriving ecosystems. Our journey began with a simple question: How can we create healthy, vibrant lawns without relying on harmful chemicals and synthetic inputs? To find the answer, we turned to the soil—the foundation of all life—and embarked on a journey of exploration and experimentation.
We started by testing our compost, teas, and extracts, with our very first one in April 2015 using brightfield microscopy, continuing until 2022. We also incorporated advanced techniques such as a DNA test for our Johnson Su compost and the Haney test and PLFA analysis in 2023. These tests provided valuable insights into the health and composition of our soil, allowing us to tailor our approach to the specific needs of lawns. Consulting with experts like Lance Gunderson helped us interpret the data and refine our methods, ensuring that we were on the right track.
As we delved deeper into the world of soil biology, we discovered the power of compost extracts over the winter of 2016 for 2017. These potent brews, enriched with beneficial microorganisms, became the cornerstone of our approach. By harnessing the natural processes of decomposition and fermentation, we were able to create a powerful elixir that revitalized the soil and nurtured plant health from the ground up.
The Brewing Process: Nature’s Brew is more than just a liquid fertilizer—it’s a carefully crafted elixir designed to nourish soil life and enhance nutrient availability. At the heart of Nature’s Brew lies a synergistic blend of inputs, including nitrogen-rich compounds, humic substances, and LAB (lactic acid bacteria) serum. This unique formulation initiates a biochemical transformation that takes place over 24 to 48 hours. During this time, nitrogen is converted into amino acids, enriching the brew with bioavailable nutrients. Mineral supplements are then added to further enhance microbial activity and nutrient uptake. Crafting Nature’s Brew is a labor of love that begins with the selection of ingredients, ensuring a potent concoction that revitalizes the soil and promotes plant health from the ground up.
But our journey didn’t stop there. We recognized the importance of ongoing testing and monitoring to ensure the effectiveness of our methods. From daily tests to occasional check-ins, we meticulously tracked the progress of our Nature’s Brew, adjusting our approach as needed to achieve optimal results.
One of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned along the way is the importance of context. Every lawn is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. By taking soil samples before the first application and then again at the last application, we were able to measure our progress and adapt our methods to suit the changing needs of the landscape.
